Time for a change or time to innovate?

Not only is this week the start of the new IRIS financial year, but it’s also the week in which we will finally see who we have chosen as the next UK Prime Minister. There’s a lot of talk about change amongst the politicians, when arguably what we really need is more innovation.  You can change but not innovate but you can’t innovate without changing. This applies as much to Government as it does to business, so highly relevant to us all.

I’m starting this week, looking back and learning from the past year. What went well and how can we do more of it? What didn’t work out and how can we do it better next time? Whenever I do this (usually 1st Jan and 1st May) I never cease to be amazed by how far we have travelled in just one year, yet at the same time I’m keen to accelerate faster and further by continuous improvement. Personally, I learn most by asking questions of colleagues and customers and by constantly listening.

Innovation, whether that be technological or any other form of doing things better, smarter, faster is hugely energizing and refreshing – sometimes we forget that innovation doesn’t  have to be highly complex – it’s the impact that matters.

Technology allows us to do complex things far more simply. Ten years after the .com boom, the cloud (not the volcanic one) is changing everything we do both at work and at home and at IRIS we are doing our bit to drive that forward faster http://bit.ly/dxQL95

This week is also the first year anniversary of Wired UK magazine with a list of who’s shaping the digital world. It’s a magnificent illustration of people whose mantra fits with my favourite Walt Disney quote: “If you can dream it, you can do it”

There is also a well known saying: “If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got”.

So, are you innovating enough? If not, why not?
